Chocolate Matzoh

There are a lot of reasons my husband and I knew we were meant to be together. We had had  lots of friends in common for many years, but we never met. Both of our fathers are dentists- they actually graduated from the same dental school (but they never met… his father graduated the year before mine started). His sister and I were both anthropology majors (and neither of us actually did ANYTHING with our degrees). We even drove the same exact car (blue Volkswagon Jettas)! But, I think that the thing that sealed our future, was the shared memory of fluffer-nutters on matzoh every Passover.

I think it would be hard to find a true matzoh lover. I think that we spend a lot of time trying to figure out what to put ON our matzoh to make it taste a little less like cardboard. Just plain butter works, but only the first day- it gets old fast. One of my favorites is melted muenster cheese. It’s also not too bad crumbled up and scrambled in eggs. But eventually, I need to put chocolate on top. Fortunately it is super easy.

Chocolate Matzoh:

3 sheets of plain matzoh

1 stick of butter (I didn’t say this was a very healthy recipe)

1/2 cup of sugar

1 bag of chocolate chips (semisweet or bittersweet is more likely to be kosher for Passover than milk chocolate, but make sure you read the label)

-Preheat oven to 450degrees

-Line a baking sheet with foil and spray lightly with cooking spray

-Break up matzoh as needed to fit and place in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet

-In a small sauce pan, melt together butter and sugar until just boiling

-Pour butter/sugar mixture over the matzoh and spread with a metal spatula

-Immediately pour the bag of chocolate over the butter/sugar covered matzoh and spread with spatula

-Bake for 10 minutes

-After this step, you can either chill in the freezer, or sprinkle first with something fancy (nuts, sprinkles, sea salt, MnMs… just check labels if you need to keep this kosher for Passover)

-Let chill for several hours, then break up into small pieces

-Place a few pieces in a cute cupcake wrapper, place the whole thing in a cellophane bag and tie with ribbon

-Give away to all of your friends (I don’t need ANYMORE sweets sitting around the house – I still have at least 20lbs of baby weight to lose)
